Ways to Meditate Well by Preparing Your Mind for the Best Results

I Finally Figured out how to Meditate and get results!

Meditating is simple, right? You sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, quiet your mind, and meditate.

You will then feel refreshed for the day or have a more restful sleep or less stress, depending on why you are meditating.

Well, that sounds easy enough! So you sit down, close your eyes, quiet your mind, and meditate.

But then, less than a minute goes by, and your mind starts to fill up. You start thinking of the frustrations of the day or all the things you have to do.

We start thinking about our kids, spouse, partner, friends, family, work, hobbies, or any other gazillion things that show up in our lives.

Then we feel frustrated and say to ourselves, “This seems like more work than relaxation,” so we stop.

I know just how you feel. This has happened to me too. I have tried meditating off and on for many years and could never figure out a meditation that worked for me.

Sometimes, I would fall asleep, which was ok if it was bedtime, but falling asleep didn’t do me any good if I was starting my day.

Sometimes, my mind would wander so badly that I couldn’t turn it off, or I would finally be in the middle of the meditation, and thoughts would slowly start creeping into my mind.

Before I knew it, I was not in the meditation anymore, and I was back to the chatter… So frustrating! 🙁

I Finally Figured out how to Meditate and get results!

I feel that this frustration comes from not preparing oneself for the meditation.

First, you need to clear your mind of the clutter to be in a place of stillness.

This meditation works so well because you can remove all of the thoughts from your mind for the moment.

Then you can relax your body so you can go deeper into the stillness.

Most of us start meditating to have more peace, better health, or a greater connection to spirit/higher power!

Here are a few different meditation styles

  • Guided Meditation ~ (Here)
  • Transcendental Meditation ~ (Here)
  • Labyrinth Walking Meditation ~ (Here)
  • Focusing on an object, like a flickering candle ~ (Here)
  • Listening to meditation music ~ (Here)
  • Following the breath ~ (Here)
  • or just being still

I like aspects of all of these types of meditations, but none of these did the trick when used alone.

So, I decided to create my own meditation using bits and pieces from these meditation forms, and now I have a meditation that works for me every time.

I start my meditation, go deep into the stillness, and then come out of the meditation with a clear mind and feel refreshed.

If I’m doing the meditation before bedtime, I will fall asleep faster and have a more restful sleep.

  • Helps with physical pain
  • It helps to calm emotional pain
  • Can lower blood pressure
  • Get a deeper, more restful sleep
  • Connect with spirit/higher power
  • Can help find answers

I Finally Figured out how to Meditate and get results!

What you can do before you start to meditate: 

(Keep in mind that these are only suggestions to enhance your meditation practice. However, you will still get great results doing this or any meditation without the suggestions listed.)

  • Go to the bathroom! 😉
  • Make sure you won’t be disturbed
  • Set a timer for 5 to 30min (best to start with 5min. and work your way up)
  • Diffuse some essential oils ~ (Try these)
  • Light a candle ~ (Try these)
  • Turn on some meditation music ~ (Listen here)
  • Turn down the lights
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Find a comfortable place and position

These are the steps you can use to meditate:

  1. Sit, stand or lay down

(Do what works best for you)

  1. Put your hands on your thighs with:

Palms facing up (this will allow energy to move freely in and out of the body)

Palms facing down (this will have a more grounding effect if you are feeling unsettled or scattered)

  1. Close your eyes and focus on your breath

(In through your nose out through your mouth)

  1. Then imagine your body is a tall glass of water with a drain at the bottom (your feet)
  2. Start at the top of your head and imagine all of the water is slowly draining out of the bottom of the glass (your feet)

(As the water is draining out, your body is relaxing more and more. The water is taking with it all of your chatter, stresses, pain, worries, fears, anything you want or need to release out of your mind and body)

  1. Imagine the water is draining down:

-through the top of your head and neck

-then down your torso and arms

-over your hips and thighs

-down your calves and out of the bottom of your feet

  1. Imagine this water is holding all of your chatter, pain, fear, etc. in a bubble, and this bubble is drifting away from your body far, far, away, until it just evaporates into thin air and is no longer a part of you at this moment
  2. Now, come back to your body and imagine there is a beam of light or roots like a tree going straight down from your root chakra (tail bone) and anchoring you deep down into the earth
  3. Next, invite divine love in the form of soft white light to enter through the bottom of your feet and slowly fill your body and soul with unconditional love:

-up thru your feet and calves

-over your thighs and hips

-up your torso and arms

-through your neck and head

Until this light showers out of the top of your head and enfolds your body with unconditional love, peace, healing, feeling safe and free

  1. This soft white light (divine love) surrounds your body and creates a shield of protection that nothing can pass thru or disrupt your safe place.
  2. At this point, you will want to “Be Still” and follow your breath in and out or slowly repeat the words “be still” or “calm” until you drift into the silence.
  3. Stay in this silence for 5 to 30min or however long you want (the longer you are in this peaceful stillness of mind and body, the better your results will be.

If any thoughts start to creep in, imagine those thoughts moving outside your shield, and they evaporate. Do this as many times as needed! 🙂

You can adjust this meditation to fit your needs and time frame for the moment.

Often, there are times of stress or pain when you can do a “quickie” meditation, and you won’t need to do anything but close your eyes and breathe.

Truthfully, the most essential part of your meditation is your intention of feeling more relaxed and peaceful in your mind and body.

Be open to trying new meditation methods until you find what works for you.

Just let it flow how it wants to flow. Be patient with yourself and the process; it takes time to learn a new skill.

Also, don’t get hung up on trying to do everything perfectly.

Be persistent and be as consistent as you can until it is a part of your daily routine.

Start with a 5min meditation and work your way up to 30min or longer.

You can move through the steps quickly or take your time if you have a lot to release!

So, there you have it; this meditation has worked the best for me! I hope I have given you a few new ideas!

  1. I love meditation. Life-changing. And these are all great tips, especially about getting prepped before your start. This is something most people don’t think of and thus struggle with sitting still. But no need to struggle.
