When I was transitioning from the Standard America Diet to healthier food choices.

Dairy was the hardest food for me to eliminate.

It took me months to let go of dairy products and I fought it all the way. I needed my Dairy Fix. HA!

However, I finally let go of dairy, and I feel sooo much better now!!!

Because when I eliminated dairy from my diet, I stopped having flare-ups.

That was over 15 years ago, and I have never had a flare-up since! Awesome, right?

However, I still wanted all the options and textures of dairy without the inflammation.

    • The most used, and can be used for just about anything, is Coconut oil. Replace Dairy with Coconut

Coconut Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees ~ Bake for 8 to 10 min. ~ Makes 12 bite-sized cookies. Replace Dairy with Coconut

Replace Dairy with Coconut

Ingredients

  • 6 Tbsp. Coconut flour

  • 2 Tbsp. Almond butter

  • 2 Tbsp. Coconut butter

  • 4 Tbsp. Raw honey

  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract

  • 1/4 tsp Himalayan sea salt

  • 1/4 cup Chocolate chips

Instructions Replace Dairy with Coconut

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Melt coconut butter and honey until soft and mixable.

  • Mix all ingredients (except chocolate chips); coconut flour will soak up all moisture.

  • The dough will be slightly sticky.

  • Add chocolate chips when the dough has cooled.

  • Divide into 6 medium or 12 small balls and flatten slightly on the baking sheet.

  • Bake until the edges are lightly golden, about 8 to 10 minutes.

  • These can over-bake quickly, so keep a close eye on them.

  • Let cookies cool before removing them from the baking sheet to prevent crumbling.

  • Serve with coconut milk. Enjoy!


Chicken Salad Coconut Wraps

6 to 8 Servings

Ingredients Replace Dairy with Coconut

  • 3 cups Chicken chopped

  • ¾ cup Vegan Mayo

  • ¼ cup Pecans pieces

  • ¼ cup Dried cranberries

  • 1 slice of Vegan Cheese

  • ½ hand full Broccoli sprouts

  • 2 leaf’s of Butter lettuce

  • Coconut wraps

Instructions

  • Mix the first four ingredients

  • Fill wrap with about 1/3 cup of the chicken salad

  • Top with broccoli sprouts, vegan cheese, and lettuce

  • Wrap it up, and enjoy

Other options

  • Tuna salad
  • Eggs & ham scrabble and vegan cheese
  • Fruit
  • Leftovers
  • Just about anything

Coconut Meltaway Candies 

Servings 21 candies – Prep Time 15 minutes

Ingredients Replace Dairy with Coconut

  • 3/4 cup Coconut butter
  • 3/4 cup Coconut oil
  • pinch of Sea salt
  • 3tsp Vanilla extract
  • Optional – Mini chocolate chips, Vanilla bean powder, Peppermint extract

Instructions

  • Melt coconut butter and coconut oil in a small double broiler pan over medium-low heat.
  • Add vanilla extract and sea salt.
  • Stir well with a spoon until the mixture is melted and well combined.
  • Pour into ice cube trays or silicone molds of your choice
  • Then freeze for one hour.
  • After 1 hour, store in the fridge.

Coconut Milk Banana Power Smoothie

Makes 16oz.

Replace Dairy with Coconut

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups of Coconut milk

  • 1/2 frozen Banana

  • 2 or 3 Strawberries

  • 1/4 cup frozen Kale

  • 1 scoop of Almond butter

  • 2 tbsp Collagen powder

Any other supplements can be added as well.

Mix all ingredients in a blender… Enjoy! 🙂


Coconut Yogurt Chive Dip

Makes 1 cup

Replace Dairy with Coconut

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain Coconut yogurt

  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice

  • 2 tablespoons Chives

  • ¼ teaspoon of Himalayan Salt

  • ¼ tsp Pepper

Instructions

  • Mix all ingredients

  • Refrigerate for 30 min. before use

  • Dip sweet potato fries, veggies, and chicken

Plus, the chances of giving up before it becomes a new health habit, are much higher, when we try to go to fast.

When I first started my health journey, Everyday Drinking Water was on my list of better food choices.

I wanted to make sure I was only putting the best food and water into my body!

As Jim Rohn said:

“Treat your body like a temple, NOT a woodshed!”

I took these words to heart! I knew if I was going to improve my health and feel physically better that, I needed to be mindful of everything that crossed my lips and ended up in my body! drink more water

When choosing the best type of everyday drinking water, you want to aim for pH balance.

Distilled water is too acidic, and alkaline water is too alkaline.

An ideal pH of your water should be between 6.5 to 7.5, which is neutral.

Our Body of Water

The majority of the body is made up of water, with up to 75% of the body’s weight due to H2O.

Most of the water is found within the cells of the body. The rest is found in the blood vessels and the spaces between cells.  drink more water

Without water, we would not live for very long before dehydration would set in.

What is Dehydration?

Dehydration occurs when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken in.

The body is very dynamic and always changing. This is especially true with water levels in the body.

We lose water routinely when we:

  • Breathe, and humidified air leaves the body

  • When we sweat to cool the body after exertion

  • Urinate or have a bowel movement to rid the body of waste products drink more water

On an average day, a person needs to drink a significant amount of water to replace this routine loss.

How Much Water to Drink in a Day?

At the end of the day, no one can tell you exactly how much water you need. drink more water

This will depend on your ~

  • Age

  • Weight

  • and Health of the individual.

Try experimenting to see what works best for you.

If you don’t drink a lot or any water now, then start with 1 6 to 8oz glass an day for a week and increase it by 2oz a week until you find what works best for you.

Some people may function better with more water than usual, while for others, it only results in more frequent trips to the bathroom. Ugg.

If you want to keep things simple, follow these guidelines ~

  1. When you’re thirsty, drink water.

  2. Stop drinking water when you’re not thirsty anymore.

  3. During high heat, exercise, and illness make sure to drink enough to compensate for the lost fluids.

  4. There you go, simple right!

This should work for the majority of people.

Note: For those of us with an autoimmune condition and  on medication, we’ll want to drink more water to help flush the liver and kidneys, so the can preform at their best! drink more water

Drinking Water Dos and Don’ts

Alkaline Water drink more water

Normal drinking water generally has a neutral pH of 7. Alkaline water typically has a pH of 8 or 9.

Your body is not designed to drink alkaline water alone. If you drink too much, it can disrupt the acid production in your stomach.

This can result in indigestion, GERD, or stomach ulcers.

Other risks include vulnerability to bacterial overgrowth and other germs, causing infection in your small intestine (SIBO).

Plus, your body may also have difficulty digesting and absorbing nutrients. 

~Don’t – drink alkaline water every day.


Bottled Water drink more water

It is everywhere, and there are a lot of choices. There are different stories out there about some bottled water is just tap water???

Plus, most plastic bottles can leach into your water, and no one needs plastic in their diet, right?

You can buy a glass water bottle and fill it with filtered water. That way, you’ll always know what your drinking.

And, why pay for water when you can filter your own?

There are several affordable options when it comes to a home filtration system.

However, sometimes our only option is bottled water in plastic, but there are some better choices than others.

+Do – Buy a glass water bottle and fill it with filtered water!


Coconut Water drink more water

Coconut water is slightly sweet with a subtle, nutty flavor. It’s also fairly low in calories and carbs.

It’s delicious, nutritious, and a natural beverage that’s extremely good for you.

It may benefit your heart, blood sugar, kidney health, and more.

The water is freshest when it comes directly from the coconut.

Simply press a straw into the soft part of a green coconut and start drinking.

Store the coconut in your refrigerator and consume it within two to three weeks of purchase.

You can also buy bottled coconut water at most health food stores.

However, be sure to read the ingredients to verify you’re getting 100% coconut water.

Some bottled brands contain added sugar or flavoring agents. And, no one need extra sugar, right?

+Do – Drink Coconut water and enjoy every day!

Distilled Water drink more water

Distilled water is a type of purified water that has both contaminants and minerals removed.

Since distilled water doesn’t contain its own minerals, it has a tendency to pull them from whatever it touches to maintain a balance.

So when you drink distilled water, it may pull small amounts of minerals from your body, including from your teeth.

Depending on where you live, distilled water could be better for you than tap water.

If your town’s water is tainted with harmful chemicals or pesticides, you’re safer drinking distilled or bottled water.

I recommend using mineral drops in distilled water.

– Don’t – drink distilled water every day unless add mineral drops.


Reverse Osmosis Water (RO) drink more water

Reverse Osmosis is a type of filtration process. The water machines in health food stores typically produce reverse osmosis water.

However, going to the store to buy your water can be, well a hassle right?

I use and highly recommend a countertop unit called AquaTru! It filter’s your tap water into RO water and is so convenient!

Keep in mind, reverse osmosis systems have no way to differentiate between “bad” ingredients and good ones.

So while harmful contaminants are being removed, so are the trace minerals that our bodies need to perform their best, like iron and manganese.

So, you’ll want to use mineral drops in reverse osmosis water.

+Do – re-mineral reverse osmosis water and drink every day.


Sparkling Water drink more water

Sparkling water is water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure.

Known as Carbonated water. Carbonation produces a bubbly drink.

Here are a few options ~

  • Sparkling water

  • Club soda

  • Soda water

  • Seltzer water

  • and Fizzy water

With the exception of seltzer water, carbonated waters usually have salt added to improve the taste.

Sometimes small amounts of other minerals are included, too.

Natural sparkling mineral waters, such as Perrier and San Pellegrino, are different.

These waters are captured from a mineral spring and tend to contain minerals and sulfur compounds.

These waters are often carbonated as well.

+Do – Enjoy sparkling water.


Spring Water drink more water

Mountain spring water is some of the healthiest water on the planet because it is “living water.”

Living water, like “living” food is in its raw, natural state the way nature intended.

The best source of natural spring water is from a natural spring.

But there are some good choices of spring water at your local health food store too.

+Do – Spring water is a great choice for everyday drinking water.

Tap Water drink more water

The tap water we drink, cook with, and bathe in typically comes from either surface water sources like:

  • Streams

  • Rivers

  • Lakes

  • and Reservoirs

Or from underground sources like aquifers, permeable rocks that can store and transmit water.

A range of dangerous pollutants has been found in this water, including:

  • Bacteria like e. Coli

  • Toxic algae

  • Lead

  • Sulfur

  • Excess iron

and general dirt and grit, that are known to lead to a host of health issues.

From gastrointestinal problems to neurological disorders, as well as reproductive issues. 

Tap water contains, Fluoride and other chemicals we don’t want to be ingesting.

Unlike other chemicals monitored by water systems, fluoride is intentionally added to drinking water.

Even though research clearly shows that fluoride is most effective when used topically in toothpaste and not ingested. 

Luckily, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a variety of programs and searchable maps that make checking the contaminants in your water simple.

~DON’T drink tap water.


What’s Next?

 

Running can be a great way to get in some extra exercise.

But, running to the bathroom every 30min from to much water, won’t get you the kind of results you want!

Be mindful of what type of water you are putting in your body. drink more water

Itchy Scalp? Essential Oil Easy Home Treatments Helps Ditch the Itch

Oh man, my itchy scalp is driving, gaga!  

Here’s how my itchy scalp dilemma started.

There I was, sitting in the dermatologist’s exam room, as he was cutting out the small patch of basil cell skin cancer from the top of my head.

I saw chunks of my already thinning hair falling into my lap while holding back my tears :(…

At that moment, all I imagined was I had a huge bald spot on the top of my head.

Thankfully, it only left a small bald spot. Whew!

But then, I developed seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp, and it was so very itchy.

So, I had these two new problems to solve.

  1. My itchy scalp

  2. My new bald spot (more on how I cover my bald spot HERE)

I tried some hair products made for scalp dermatitis. But my scalp was still itchy, and the products were expensive.

That’s when I looked into natural ways to heal my itchy scalp with essential oils & other DIY hair care.

I created three effective hair care blends with essential oils, and the itchiness is gone. Yippee!

While I studied essential oils, I learned how effective they can be at solving issues with skin and hair.

Effective Essential Oils & Ingredients to Ditch the Itch 

  • Rosemary EO – Hair growth, dandruff, increases circulation, antibacterial, antioxidant

  • Geranium EO – Calms redness and irritation. Reduces swelling and inflammation

  • Tea Tree EO – Healing dermatitis, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial

  • Lavender EO – Skin healing, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving

  • SolubolWill evenly dissolves essential oils into water or hydrosol. It protects the skin from neat essential oil. Has a very mild aroma that doesn’t influence the aroma of the blend. Use at 4:1 ratio – 4 drops of Solubol for every 1 drop of essential oil.

Ditch the Itchy Scalp

Below are the three DIY hair care blends I created to ditch my itchy scalp!

My hair feels so much healthier now and they are super easy to make!

Honey Shampoo

  • 2 oz Organic Honey Raw and Unfiltered – Scalp health, moisturizes, kills bacteria, antioxidant
  • 50 drops Rosemary EO – Hair growth, improves circulation, antibacterial, antioxidant
  • 26 drops Lavender EO – Reduces inflammation, antibacterial

Instructions Itchy Scalp

Combine all ingredients in an 8oz PET squirt bottle and shake well to mix.

Honey will dissolve overnight and mixes well with the other ingredients.

Shake well before each use.

Apply to wet hair and work into a lather. Let sit for a few minutes before washing out.

Store in the shower.

Note: You can double this blend!


Honey Conditioner

  • 6 oz Organic Apple Cider Vinegar – Un-tangles hair, brings back body and shine, stimulates the scalp

  • 2 oz Organic Honey Raw and Unfiltered – Scalp health, moisturizes, kills bacteria, antioxidant

  • 50 drops Rosemary – Hair growth, dandruff, improves circulation, antibacterial, antioxidant

  • 36 drops Geranium – Relieves excess oil or dryness. Skin healing and anti-inflammatory 

  • 10 drops Tea Tree – Anti-bacterial, healing

Instructions Itchy Scalp

Combine all ingredients in an 8oz dark glass or 8oz PET plastic bottle with a Spray cap, shake well to mix.

Honey will dissolve overnight and mixes well with the other ingredients.

Shake well before each use.

Apply to wet hair only (This way, the ACV will be well diluted by the shower water.)

Spray on hair, then work into the hair and scalp.

Store in the shower.

Note: This conditioner does not lather. But it effectively de-tangles and softens hair.


Ditch the Itchy Scalp

Rosey Leave-in Conditioner

  • 8 oz Rosewater Hair growth, moisturizing, soothes inflammation and dandruff, makes your hair smell great!

  • 2.5 ml SolubolWill evenly dissolves essential oils into water or hydrosol. Protects the skin.

  • 50 drops Rosemary – Hair growth, dandruff, improved circulation, antibacterial, antioxidant

  • 36 drops Geranium – Relieves excess oil or dryness. Skin healing and anti-inflammatory 

Mix solubol with essential oils (let sit for a few hours or overnight to dissolve the oils) in an 8oz dark glass or 8oz PET plastic bottle with a Spray capThen add rose water and mix well.

Instructions Itchy Scalp

After you wash and towel dry your hair.

Lift sections of damp hair and spritz directly on the scalp and hair.

And massage in.

This can be drippy, so have your towel nearby.

Shake well before each use.

Store in the bathroom cabinet.

Thinning Hair? How To Thicken It With An Easy DIY Home Remedy

There I was, sitting in the dermatologist’s exam room.

I was being prepped to have a small patch of basil cell skin cancer removed from the crown of my head.

I held back my tears as I saw chunks of hair (from my already thinning hair) fall into my lap. 

All I imagined was I had a huge bald spot on my head.

Fortunately, it only left a small bald spot. But a bald spot is a bald spot, and it wasn’t easy to cover up. Ugh.

*Side note: When the Dr. was stitching the skin around the area where he removed the skin cancer, he and his assistant had to pull the skin together pretty tight to stitch it back together. So, I did get a mini eye lift from the whole experience… Bonus!!!

Then, after surgery, I developed seborrheic dermatitis, so my head was very itchy. Ugg. (Read more on how I healed my itchy scalp with easy DIY home treatments, HERE).

Now I had these two new problems to solve.             

  1. My new bald spot

  2. And an itchy scalp

So, I started experimenting with different hairstyles and DIY hair care products and discovered an excellent way to cover my bald spot and heal my itchy scalp. Yea!!!

I’ve Had a Love/Hate Relationship

With my Hair All My Life. HA!

I always wanted thick, shiny hair, but that didn’t happen.

As the years go by, my hair has gotten shorter and thinner, mainly on the crown of my head. Ugh.

So, since my visit to the dermatologist’s office, I started experimenting with different options to improve my relationship with my hair. 

I’m happy to say; that I found a hairstyle and some DIY products that finally give me the fuller hair I’ve always wanted!

Yippee! And I mean, Yippeeee!!!

(all of you thinning hair girls know what I’m talking about;)

For the first time in a long time, I can say,

“I really like my hair.”

I don’t want to commit to saying I love my hair; I don’t want to mislead anyone, but I really, really like my hair now! 🙂

Hair Boost Dry Shampoo to the Rescue

Yep, dry shampoo can thicken your thinning hair, and it works like a dream!

My thought for trying DIY dry shampoo was that since it has color, my scalp would have color on it.

This way, it would deflect light off my scalp and cover up my bald spot, and it worked!

After applying the DIY dry shampoo to my bald spot and thinning areas of my hair darkens the areas and blends in with my hair.

I am so happy with the results! 

After using my hair boost dry shampoo for a while, I noticed some unexpected benefits!

It has turned out to be so much more than just covering up my bald spot; It also has:

  • Added fullness to my thinning hair

  • It hides that see-through-to-the-scalp look of thinning hair

  • It helps cover my grey roots, so it prolongs the time between coloring

It’s a win-win all the way around!

How to Make Hair Boost Dry Shampoo

4oz – 1% Blend

Hair Boost Dry Shampoo

  • 4 Tbsp Arrowroot Powder – dry shampoo blends are built around a base of organic arrowroot powder, a super lightweight starch that becomes invisible once applied.

  • 1 to 5  Tbsp Cocoa Powder – gives the dry shampoo the color. (This combination is good for light, med, or dark blond to dark brown hair.)

  • Optional & Recommended ~ Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia) – Skin healing, calms, soothes and encourages balance in all body systems. Smells wonderful!

Mix all ingredients in a mixing bowl and store in an air-tight 4oz mason jar.

Your hair color will determine how much cocoa powder to use.

The lighter your hair, the less cocoa. The darker your hair, the more cocoa you will use.

I suggest starting with 1 Tbsp of cocoa powder and mixing; then, you can add more at 1 Tbsp of cocoa powder until you get the best match. That’s it!

Pros: Easy to make and apply. Once it’s applied, you don’t notice it, and it doesn’t clump up.

Cons: It can make your hair feel dryer (totally worth it for thicker hair!) and may leave color on your pillowcase.

Before you apply the Hair Boost dry shampoo, you’ll want to add hair serum.

Putting oil on thin hair might seem odd and not a good idea, but hear me out.

Applying the serum to the hair first will counteract the drying effects of the powder for the perfect balance.

It won’t make your hair look greasy either, as long as it’s applied to the ends only, not on the scalp!

The hair oil I recommend is Argon Oil. This is a light oil that won’t weigh your hair down.

Thinning Hair

Silky Soft Hair Serum

1oz – 2% blend

20 mg Argan oil (Argania spinosa L) – Luxurious and silky, Restores and hydrates hair, Rich in essential fatty acids, Vitamin E, Antioxidants

10 mg Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis) – Easily absorbed into the hair, Very moisturizing, Antioxidant 

4 drops Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus/Rosmarinus) – Great for hair growth and increases blood flow

3 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) – Skin healing, calms, soothes and is great for your hair

3 drops Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens var roseum) – Balances excess oil or dryness, Antibacterial

2 drops Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) – Help’s to retain moisture in the hair

Tips Before You Begin

  • The shorter the hair, the less dry shampoo you need.

  • Start with a small amount and add more as needed.

  • Apply dry shampoo to your roots only.

  • Apply hair oil to the ends and top of the hair only.

  • Keep and apply powder over the sink. This can be a little messy so go slowly.

Applying Hair Boost Dry Shampoo

Start with a small amount of dry shampoo and add more until you get the right amount.

Because if you put too much dry shampoo on your scalp/hair, it will make your hair look and feel like straw, and it won’t be easy to comb through.

Thinning Hair

On the other hand, if you don’t put enough dry shampoo in the hair, you wouldn’t get the fullness you want, either.

Because of this, it can be a trial and error when you first start using DIY dry shampoo.

No worries, It won’t take long to figure out how much you will need for your hair type.

Note: I have found that I get the best results when I apply the DIY dry shampoo, mainly to the roots over the entire crown of my head. I let it sit for a few minutes to absorb it. Then I have less dry hair and overall better results with lift and fullness! 🙂

Steps to apply Hair Boost Dry Shampoo

  1. Finger-dry your hair. Best not to use a hairdryer on thinning hair.

  2. Use a good hair oil (or make your own). Apply a small amount to the ends and top layers of hair only, not the roots.

  3. Apply oil to the hair before applying the dry shampoo.

  4. Add dry shampoo with a powder brush – Dip the powder brush into DIY dry shampoo to add the powder to the bristles. Then slowly turn the brush with bristles facing up, lightly tap the handle on the counter so the powder will fall into the brush hairs.

  5. While leaning over the sink. Lift sections of your hair and apply the DIY shampoo to the scalp and roots only.

  6. Allow the dry shampoo to sit for a few minutes.

  7. Style as usual.

  8. For extra lift, backcomb your hair at the roots, top, and sides of the hair. Lift hair and spray under the hair with hair spray.

What’s Next?

If you try DIY Hair Boost dry shampoo, you may want to experiment with it a few times before getting the right balance.

I would give it a test run on a day when you have time to play with it.

Note: I would not try the dry shampoo for the first time before a big meeting, first date, or a big event, just in case too much dry shampoo is added the first time.

Even though I still have my bald spot, I only have tears of joy when I use this hair camouflage duo!

Safety Guidelines

Safely using Essential Oils in DIY Skin/Hair Care products comes down to a few simple rules ~

  • Safe Dilutions

  • Blending Guidelines

  • Use High-Quality Oils

  • Never use Oxidized Oils

  • Be Mindful

Safe Dilutions

Some essential oils can irritate the skin, so they are often diluted for safety. They are typically diluted with a carrier like water, witch hazel, aloe, or carrier oils.

Carrier oils are made from plants and plant parts. They’re not volatile the way essential oils are, and they tend to be heavier.

Some great carrier oils are ~

  • Jojoba oil

  • Sweet almond oil

  • Argan oil

  • Rosehip oil

  • Fractionated coconut oil

Blending Guidelines

This is so very important to know because the number of drops you use per 1oz (30 ml) of carrier oil will determine:

A. If your blend will be effective at addressing the skin concern, it’s made for

B. And even more importantly, it will determine how safe the blend will be to use on the skin.

Blending Guidelines and Dilutions

“There are approximately 500–600 drops of essential oils in a 1oz (30 ml) bottle.

1% of 500 drops = 5 drops ~ 1% of 600 drops = 6 drops

  • Use the following dilutions, for pregnant women and children, for anyone with a compromised immune system, and for using directly on the face:

1% dilution = 5 – 6 drops total in 1 oz. (30 ml) of carrier

  •  For massage oils and daily use:

2% dilution = 10 – 12 total drops in 1 oz. (30 ml) carrier.

  • Specific injury of muscle, tendon, and bone: 3–10% depending on the individual, age, situation, and oils being used:

3% dilution = 15 – 18 total drops in 1 oz. (30 ml) carrier.

  •  For local issues such as chest congestion:

3–10% depending on the individual, age, situation, and oils being used (If 1% dilution is 5–6 drops, then a 10% dilution is 50–60 drops)

  • If the problem is acute and severe, you can only go up to 25% dilution for short-term use only.

Acute situations include headaches, superficial cuts, bee stings, and burns. 

Severe problems include muscle cramps, intense spasms, significant bruising, or pain.

  • Neat (means undiluted essential oil and no carrier oil) oils can be used for the following:

Small areas, local use, acute situations, short-term use. These must be the highest quality, non-oxidized oils.

Essential Oils in DIY Skin Care

Use High-Quality Oils

These oils will be therapeutic grade, GC/MS tested, and unadulterated. Tisserand and Young define adulteration as:

Intentional dilution or fabrication.

He goes on to say that essential oils can be adulterated with odorous or non-odorous substances to dilute an essential oil or absolute.

Odorous adulterants; can include other essential oils, essential oil fractions or residues, synthetic aroma chemicals similar to those found in the oil, or aromachemicals not found in the oil.

Non-odorous adulterants, or extenders; include substances such as ethanol, mineral oil, isopropyl myristate, glycols, phthalates, and fixed oils such as rapeseed and cottonseed. Tisserand and Young

Adulteration can happen at any point, from distillation/extraction to reaching the end-user.

Some points along the way can include:

  • Co-gathering or co-distillation of several varieties (for example, several types of lavender gathered and distilled together)

  • A distiller may adulterate an oil before selling it to a distributor.

  • Distributors may adulterate an oil before selling it to a retailer.

  • The retailer may adulterate an oil before selling it to a customer.

Never use Oxidized Oils

Degradation/oxidation is the natural process of the chemical breakdown of essential oils.

This commonly occurs from oxygen, heat, and light. The length of time that this process takes to occur can vary significantly based on the essential oil and storage conditions.

It is important to reduce exposure to oxygen, heat, and light.

Some things that will help to slow down the process of degradation/oxidation of essential oils include storing them in:

  • Dark glass containers

  • Store in a dark and cool environment like the refrigerator

  • Keep essential oil caps tightly sealed to minimize exposure to oxygen

Note ~ You don’t have to throw away your old or oxidized oils. You can use them in your DIY cleaning products to give them an extra boost.

Be Mindful

Be mindful when using essential oils with any of these groups ~

  • People with certain health conditions

  • Pregnant women

  • Breastfeeding moms

  • Children under 5yrs

  • The elderly

  • Anyone with a compromised immune system

As a result, using essential oils in an unsafe manner with any of these groups could cause some unforeseen issues.

So, if you are ever unsure, the safest thing to do is NOT use essential oils with these groups.

Bottom Line

I know; I was overdoing it with the number of essential oil drops I used per ounce.

But, us mid-lifer’s want to hold on to our youthful looks. I think I just like to learn things the hard way sometimes, HA!

I may not look 25 again. However, I know that I’m using them safely now and can enjoy all the benefit from my DIY skin care and healing blends.

What are the Advantages of Throwing your Wired Bra out the Window?

OK, so you don’t actually have to be throwing your wired bra out the window, but I did get your attention, and that is what I was hoping to do!

For years we’ve heard that wired bras were not good for us to wear, but what does that really mean?

I did try on wireless bras in the past, but I wasn’t thrilled at how my B cup looked like a flat chested 0-cup. Ugh.

Nope, that was not going to work for me!

I didn’t like the choices back then, so I happily kept wearing my wired bra!

However, I’ve recently discovered why wearing wired bras is not the best choice for our breasts.

It has to do with the Lymph nodes and Lymphatic system in and around the breast tissue and the armpits.

What is the Lymphatic system?

Our bodies have a network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes, which is part of the body’s immune system.

Fluids, waste substances, and other things such as viruses and bacteria in the body’s tissues are gathered outside the bloodstream.

Just as veins collect and carry blood throughout the body, lymph vessels carry a watery yellow fluid called lymph.

Lymph flows through the lymphatic system and eventually drains into veins. This system helps to get rid of waste products from the body.

Lymph and Breast Tissue

Your breast tissue goes up to your collar bone and armpit. The armpits have many lymph nodes, also known as lymph glands.

A series of lymph nodes running up the center of your chest is called the inner mammary chain.

Plus, there is a network of lymph nodes around the breast.

It’s vital to examine these areas regularly.

Accumulated Toxins

Dr. Michael Schacter, MD, of the Schacter Center for Complementary Medicine, explains it this way:

“Over 85 percent of the lymph fluid flowing from the breast drains to the armpit lymph nodes. Most of the rest drains to the nodes along the breast bone. Wired bras and other external tight clothing can impede flow.”

The design of a wired bra and the amount of time you wear it will impact lymphatic drainage.  

Blocking off lymphatic drainage while wearing a wired bra allows toxic chemicals to stay trapped in the breast tissue. And may aid in the growth of breast cancer as a result.

Free-flowing Drainage

It’s necessary for the body to regularly detoxify itself of waste products and other harmful or toxic substances from the industrialized world we live in.

The amount and degree the lymphatic system can drain these toxins depend mainly on body movements to energize it.

Your lymphatic system doesn’t merely work on its own. It gets fired up when the body moves through exercise, dancing, and even a brisk walk. 

Breast Constriction

When breasts are confined to a form-fitting wired bra, they are not free to move in harmony with the rest of the body, promote lymph drainage, and start moving toxins out. 

“The wires under the armpit will block this flow.”

An increase in temperature is another concern that comes along with breast restriction.

Breasts should hang out and be somewhat away from the torso; this will help maintain a lower temperature than the rest of the body.

Excessive heat in the breast can alter hormone function and increase the risk of breast cancer, which is hormone-dependent.  

The Lymph System does not Have a Built-in Pump 

Therefore if you are not engaged in some form of exercise like running, swimming, yoga, tai chi, or brisk walking, the lymph doesn’t flow as well, so it could use some extra help to keep it moving so it can do its job.

Massaging the lymph around the breast is one of the best ways to keep the lymph flowing.

How to Meditate Well

Prepare the Mind for Meditation

Most of us have trouble meditating because we think we can just stop what we are doing & thinking and quickly be still.

Unfortunately, that rarely happens. We need to clear our mind of the chatter first before we to go into the stillness.

This mind-prep works well because you can remove the thoughts from your mind, for the moment anyway.

Then you can relax into your body so you can get better results.

Different Meditation Styles

  • Guided Meditation

  • Transcendental Meditation

  • Labyrinth Walking Meditation

  • Focusing on a sound or object, like a flickering candle

  • Listening to meditation music

  • Following the breath

These are all great types of meditations, but most meditations won’t work well until you clear the chatter from your mind.

Now when I meditate, with the Mind-Prep Meditation, I go deeper into the stillness and have better results.

I have found that one of the best times to meditate is once you crawl into bed. This helps to release the busyness of the day.

You will fall asleep faster and have a more restful sleep. Which is essential for those of us in midlife dealing with autoimmune pain.

How to Meditate Well

Before you Start a Deep Meditation 

Here are a few suggestions before you start. But keep in mind that these are only suggestions to enhance your meditation practice.

You will still get results doing this or any meditation without the suggestions listed.

  • Go to the bathroom! 😉

  • Make sure you won’t be disturbed

  • Set a timer for 5 to 30min (best to start with 5min. and work up to 30min or more)

  • Diffuse some essential oils

  • Light a candle

  • Turn on some meditation music

  • Turn down the lights

  • Wear comfortable clothing

  • Find a comfortable place and position

Steps to Mind-Prep Meditation

  1. Sit, stand, or lay down

(Do what works best for you)

  1. Put your hands on your thighs with:

Palms facing up (this will allow energy to move freely in and out of the body)

Palms facing down (this will have a more grounding effect if you are feeling unsettled or scattered)

  1. Close your eyes and focus on your breath

(In through your nose, out through your mouth)

  1. Then imagine your body is a tall glass of water with a drain at the bottom of your feet.

  2. Start at the top of your head and imagine all of your thoughts are being mixed up in a blender until they are blurry and quiet. Then the water slowly drains out of the bottom of your feet.

(As the water is draining out, your body relaxes more and more. The water is taking with it all of your chatter, stresses, pain, worries, fears, anything you want or need to release out of your mind and body)

  1. Imagine the water is draining slowly down:

-starting at the top of your head & relax

-down through the neck & relax

-then down your torso and arms & relax

-over your hips and thighs & relax

-down your calves & relax

-and out of the bottom of your feet & relax

  1. The water is holding all of your chatter, pain, fear, etc, in a bubble, and this bubble is drifting far, far, away from your body until it evaporates into thin air and is no longer a part of you at this moment.

  2. Come back to your body and imagine there is a beam of light or roots like a tree going straight down from your root chakra (tail bone) and anchoring you deep down into the earth.

  3. Now, invite divine love in the form of soft white light (or you can make it pink, whatever feels good to you!;) to enter through the bottom of your feet and slowly fill your body, mind, and soul with unconditional love:

-slowly up thru the bottom of your feet and calves

-over your thighs and hips

-up your torso and arms

-through your neck and head

Until this light showers out of the top of your head and enfolds your body down to your feet with unconditional love, peace, healing, and feeling safe.

  1. This soft white light (divine love) surrounds your body and creates a shield of protection that nothing can pass thru or disrupt your safe place.

  2. At this point, you will want to “Be Still” and follow your breath in and out, or slowly repeat the words “harmony” or “calm”, or focus on a sound until you drift into a deeper meditation.

  3. Stay in this silence for 5 to 30min or however long you want (the longer you are in this peaceful stillness of mind and body, the better your results will be.

Note: If any thoughts start to creep in (and they will), imagine those thoughts moving to the outside of your shield of protection and evaporating. Do this as many times as needed! You’ve got this! 🙂

How to Meditate Well

“Quickie” Meditation 

You can adjust this meditation to fit your needs and time frame for the moment.

Often, there are times of stress or pain when you can do a “quickie” meditation.

You won’t need to do anything but close your eyes and slowly breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth.

As you breathe, focus on the area of pain or stress at that moment, and imagine it’s released and moves out of your body and mind.

In Conclusion

Remember, the essential part of your meditation is your intention to feel more relaxed and peaceful in your mind and body.

Be open to new meditation methods until you find what works for you. Be patient with yourself and the process; it takes time to learn a new skill. Practice makes progress!

Also, don’t get hung up on trying to do everything perfectly. Just let it flow how it wants to flow. How to Meditate Well
